The Opportunity
A long-term passive income stream from land you already own.
Ontario needs new clean energy, and landowners near the right infrastructure are in a uniquely strong position to benefit. Here's why the timing has never been better.
Solar and battery storage is the fastest, most cost-effective way to meet Ontario's growing energy needs.
Why Distribution Solar & Storage
Ontario's electricity grid is under pressure. Demand is growing by over 2% every year — driven by electric vehicles, data centres, and the electrification of homes and industry. The province needs 1,200 MW of new solar capacity and 800 MW of new firm capacity by 2030.
New nuclear power plants won't be ready until the mid-2030s at the earliest, and cost more than twice as much to build. Distribution-scale solar and battery storage can be built faster, cheaper, and closer to where the power is needed — making it the practical solution for Ontario's near-term energy gap.
The Ontario government has responded with a clear procurement program through the IESO (the province's electricity market operator), creating a structured, well-supported pathway for new solar and storage projects.

Annual electricity demand growth forecast for the next 20 years
2%
Ontario's electricity demand has grown by 2% every year and is forecast to continue at this rate for the next two decades, driven by electric vehicles, data centres, and the electrification of homes and industry.
Of new solar capacity needed in Ontario by 2030
1,200 MW
The province's electricity operator has identified a need for 1,200 MW of new solar capacity by 2030. That gap needs to be filled — and distribution solar is the fastest way to do it.
The cost of new nuclear power compared to solar and storage
2x
New nuclear power plants cost more than twice as much to build as solar and storage, and won't be ready until the mid-2030s at the earliest. Solar and storage is the practical solution for Ontario's near-term energy needs.
What Land We Are Looking ForWe are actively seeking land near hydro lines and substations across Ontario.
Not all land is suitable for solar development — location relative to the electricity grid is the critical factor. We target sites that are:
5 to 20 buildable acres in size
Located near a distribution feeder or substation (typically within 1–2 km)
Outside of significant environmental or heritage features and prime agricultural land
In Ontario municipalities that are receptive to renewable energy development
You do not need to stop farming immediately, we work around existing land use during the development process, which can take 3-5 years before construction begins.
If you are unsure whether your land might qualify, get in touch. We are happy to do a no-obligation desktop assessment.
Benefits For Landowners
-
Receive up to $200,000 per year in passive rental income for 30 or more years, with an annual escalator that adjusts your payments each year to keep pace with inflation.
-
Once you sign the lease option, we handle everything — all planning approvals, utility interconnection, construction, and ongoing maintenance. Your role is simply that of a standard landlord.
-
You remain the landowner throughout. The arrangement works like a standard agricultural lease. If you sell the property, the existing lease terms and payments transfer automatically to the new owner.
-
Solar panels sit lower than a field of corn before harvest. We minimise visual impact through anti-glare technology and natural screening where needed. At the end of the lease, we restore the land to its original condition and recycle all equipment.
What a Superior Energy lease means for you.
Benefits For Your Community
Good for you. Good for Ontario.
Beyond lease income, a Superior Energy project delivers broader benefits to your local community and the province as a whole.
-
A project on your land will help power Ontario's economy with low-cost and clean electricity, more quickly and competitively than alternative energy sources
-
We collaborate with the local municipality to fund much-needed investments and improvements
-
The projects create meaningful job opportunities throughout development, construction and operation
-
Our projects are planned to harmonize with nature from the start by incorporating sheep grazing between rows of solar panels, natural screening with native shrubs and pollinator plants
Frequently Asked Questions
-
Beyond your lease income, the project lowers utility rates for all customers, creates jobs during construction and ongoing maintenance, contributes to powering Ontario and generates clean electricity that reduces reliance on fossil fuels.
-
Yes. Every lease agreement includes an annual escalator that adjusts your payments each year to reflect inflation.
-
Yes, you remain the landowner throughout. The arrangement works like a standard agricultural lease. If you sell the property, the existing lease terms and payments transfer automatically to the new owner.
-
Typically the zoning remains unchanged. In the event that rezoning is required and triggers a higher tax bill, Superior Energy will cover the difference in full.
-
We hire a local operations and maintenance team who visit periodically to keep the equipment and land in good condition, including weed and vegetation management. Visits are infrequent since solar and batteries require minimal upkeep.
-
We restore the land to its original condition and decommission and recycle all equipment. If you choose to extend, we inspect and maintain the equipment to preserve efficiency, and payments continue without interruption.
-
Fully installed solar panels sit lower than a field of corn before harvest. We minimize visual impact through anti-glare panel technology and, where needed, newly planted trees or shrubs as natural screening. Battery energy storage systems and small data centers are housed in compact shipping containers and the compound is fenced and screened.
-
No. Once you sign the lease option, we handle all due diligence, planning approvals, and utility interconnection directly with the relevant authorities. Your role is simply that of a standard landlord.
-
No. We are an independent, privately owned company. We coordinate with your local utility and contractors to secure approvals and meet grid connection requirements, but we operate separately.
